In support of the increasing emphasis on health promotion in schools, Healthway is offering grants of up to $2,500 to Western Australian school communities through the Health Promoting Schools Grant Scheme. This is an initiative from Healthway to support schools to develop projects that promote the health of their students through activities aligned with the Health Promoting Schools (HPS) Framework.
Schools are encouraged to undertake activities that promote one of the priority health areas; mental health, nutrition or physical activity. All schools throughout Western Australia are eligible to apply and there are no closing dates. Applications are particularly encouraged from schools in rural and remote areas and those with high numbers of Indigenous students.
In return for funding, schools are asked to undertake a range of health promotion activities that are aligned to the HPS framework, including:
- Forming a Health Promoting School Committee;
- Revising or developing school health promotion guidelines;
- Instigating an extension of classroom activities aligned to the health promoting schools framework;
- Raise awareness of health promotion activities amongst parents and the broader community; and
- Creating publicity about the health promotion activity within your school.
The project that your school designs needs to consider the HPS framework by having input from the students, their parents, teachers, allied health professionals that are linked to your school (eg local dietitian) and the curriculum. This application form is designed to help you by asking question that address the HPS framework. Examples of projects that Healthway is able to fund are also included in these guidelines to assist schools in designing a project that is consistent with this framework. Applicants are strongly encouraged to discuss their ideas with Healthway staff first by calling 9476 7000. There is a two month lead time for applications received until the project start date.
