We are honoured to host guest presenters, Matthew Sheilds, Principal Consultant (Department of Education) & Dr Donna Barwood, HPE Co-ordinator (Edith Cowan University). Read more about them below.
Matthew Sheilds is currently a Principal Consultant for Learning Area Partnerships within the Department of Education, providing strategic, policy and legislative advice to the Minister of Education, the Director General and the Executive Director. In this role, he is responsible for leading the Department’s support for Pre-primary through to Year 12 with the Health and Physical Education learning area. Matt has a key role in coordinating a range of other programs related to the implementation of the Western Australian Curriculum, including researching, planning, implementing and evaluating specialist teaching and learning services, and providing professional leadership and support to schools in relation to the implementation of the Western Australian Curriculum and student achievement
Dr Donna Barwood has taught in public, private and Catholic Education sectors across primary and secondary schooling. In 2006, Donna co-wrote the Western Australia (WA) K-10 Syllabus for HPE and moved into the role of Senior Project Officer in 2010 with Protective Behaviours. In this position, Donna contributed to the development of the Protective Behaviours curriculum, the online training modules for DoE teachers and most particularly, as writer of the Protective Behaviours Aboriginal Education Supplement. In 2012, Donna was contracted by The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) to the highly regarded position as writer of the Australian Curriculum for Health and Physical Education (AC: HPE).
Donna has a Post Graduate Diploma in Educational Administration and a Masters of Education, which focused on the delivery of HE in one secondary school in WA. In 2011, Donna was awarded the ECU Dr Susan Holland Award for Educational Excellence and completed the achievement of a PhD in 2015; focusing on the delivery of HE across the breadth of WA.
Donna has strong connections with the HPE community in WA through her continued commitments to the needs of HPE teachers in WA, including the provision of professional learning, curriculum advice and as committee member to numerous educational initiatives. She is currently Coordinator and Lecturer for HPE at Edith Cowan University.
