Equipping primary and secondary teachers of health education with the skills and confidence to deliver meaningful sexuality and relationship education (SRE) is an essential element of ensuring all young people are well informed and able to look after themselves. This includes provision of a comprehensive, up-to-date teacher curriculum support website, student resources, and the delivery of teacher professional development in SRE. Most recently the education of undergraduate teacher education and training in the University sector has been piloted at Curtin University.
This seminar will discuss the importance and need of formalising undergraduate training in SRE for Health and Physical Education teachers.
Dr Deb Ollis, Senior Lecture in Education at Melbourne’s Deakin University, will be presenting on the key to change in sexuality education through undergraduate training in SRE, and Associate Professor Sharyn Burns will present on the SRE at Curtin University that supports pre-service teachers.
