Update from Royal Lifesaving WA – Water Fun in the Goldfields these holidays!

June 26, 2019

Kids and adults will be enjoying a splashing good time in the Goldfields these school holidays as the Goldfields Splash brings a range of water sports to town.

If you’ve ever wanted to learn to save a life, dive like a pro or try your hand at water polo then this is the event for you! There’ll be something for everyone with a chance to splash into pool lifesaving, swimming, triathlon, water polo and diving on July 6th at the Goldfields Oasis Leisure Centre. All sessions will be run by trained and accredited coaches and staff.

Swimming expert and former Olympic coach Leigh Nugent says as Splash Events ambassador he wants to encourage people of all ages to attend the Goldfields event.

“You never know what is going to light your fire unless you try. You might also surprise yourself and find an activity you can enjoy for the rest of your life,” says Leigh. “Water sports – whether you do them for leisure or are part of a club – are also great at increasing your mental and physical wellbeing, so I encourage you to come along and have a go!”

Royal Life Saving WA is proud to be part of the event, as we work to reduce drowning statistics in regional areas of our state. The latest National Drowning Report shows that people in regional and remote areas of WA are almost four times more likely to drown than those in the Perth metropolitan area.

Royal Life Saving WA Senior Manager Swimming and Water Safety Education, Trent Hotchkin, says “the fact that people in regional and remote areas of our state are at such high risk of drowning is concerning. It highlights the need for improved access to appropriate lifesaving, swimming and water safety programs to ensure they have the knowledge and skills needed to participate safely in the unique aquatic environments that exist in these areas.”

Royal Life Saving WA staff will not only be conducting pool lifesaving sessions at Goldfields Oasis as part of the Goldfields Splash event, but will also be visiting local primary schools to speak with staff about First Aid and Water Safety talks available for school children, and aquatic rescue training for teachers.

To jump into the Goldfields Splash you must be at least six-years-old and be able to swim 15 metres in deep water. The fun isn’t limited to kids though, adults are encouraged to join in the activities as well, and if you’ve ever considered becoming and AUSTSWIM swimming and water safety teacher it’s a great chance to find out more.

Cost is $5 per person (which includes pool entry), and all you need to bring is your bathers, goggles and a towel.
